WRTI has 7 thematic research areas intended to provide scientific, evidence-based information to support decision making while addressing today’s wildlife conservation and management challenges. These are implemented through strategic partnership and stakeholder collaborations to ensure proper stewardship, science-based decision making, and adaptive management in the wildlife sector.

Wildlife Species Population Dynamics

To gain a better understanding of the status and trends of wildlife populations in the Kenya.

Wildlife-Habitat Dynamics

To gain a better understanding of the habitat dynamics and ecological processes for more effective conservation

Wildlife Health and Population Genetics

  • To safeguard wildlife, livestock and human health through prevention, early detection, identification and management of wildlife diseases and their ecological drivers through a One-Health Approach.
  • To understand the genetic composition of our wildlife population and enhance prosecution of wildlife crime.

Natural resource governance and socio-economics

  • To generate scientific information that will guide the development of standards, methods and tools to assess and strengthen natural resource governance at multiple levels and in diverse contents.
  • Establish the socio-economic and socio-ecological dimensions of wildlife resource management.

Bioprospecting

To valorize the country’s wildlife resources and associated traditional knowledge for optimized benefits that promote livelihoods, conservation and national development.

Climate change

Develop early warning systems for wildlife species management and implement mitigation and adaptation measures.

Wildlife resource information management

Establish an integrated platform for wildlife resources data and information management.
