About Our Institute

WRTI has been established with the understanding that wildlife research agenda needs to be more focused to provide reliable scientific information on emerging wildlife conservation and management challenges.

The WRTI was established through the WCMA 2013 and the Board of the Institute was inaugurated on 10th August 2020. An Acting Director who is the Secretary to the Board was appointed on 23rd July 2020. As the first step towards operationalization of the Institute, a draft Strategic Plan 2020-2024 was developed whose strategic focus is to build structures and systems for effective delivery of its mandate.

WRTI has 7 thematic research areas intended to provide scientific, evidence-based information to support decision making while addressing today’s wildlife conservation and management challenges.

Priority Research Projects

The Integrated Wildlife Data (IWD) is our ambitious project towards building big data systems that includes habitats, populations, species, census, distributions, movement patterns, and linked to modern data sources such as earth observation sciences and geospatial tracking devices.

The Field Research Centres are responsible for coordinating and implementing research and monitoring activities in Wildlife Conservation Areas through innovative and responsive scientific research.

Research Departments

The Division is responsible for development, coordination and execution of wildlife research programs and policies. In order to effectively perform its functions, the Research Division is organized into 5 departments and 4 Field Research Centres.
